It's been awhile since I last cast on a project. Luckily the baby boom that is happening all around us gave me a good reason to pick up my needles.

Off my needles

This little number did in fact turn out much better in round two.
It was created for my cousin's baby girl. This is a cousin I remember, very distinctly, holding in her very early months of life. This baby was named after our great grandmother, where as my little guy bears the name of that great grandfather. Old names are certainly making a comeback!

Sometimes I get the urge, the need, to knit. I've had this project in my mental queue since being pregnant with the little one, yet I never got around to casting it on. Last weekend I decided I had to start a project, right then, and dug around for yarn that would fit the project (and the practicality of a newborn garment). Even as I casted on I knew it wasn't knitting up right. It was just too big, but I couldn't stop, and found myself with an 80% completed project that fit baby bejos after all. Except that it was wrong all over. Too big in the sleeves, awkward length, the wrong color for a crawler.....the list goes on and on. With a deep breath I tore it all out, a term I have recently come to learn has a name; frogging.

Ribbit, ribbit 

As in "rip it, rip it" out.

This second time around I think it's going much better. You'll find out if it ends up on an off my needles post.

Our road trip continues, on the other side of the country. I decided to pass time in the car with a little knitting, which always strikes me as an odd summer pasttime. Not much makes it odder except doing so in 100+ degree weather. You can tell that we went from one extreme to another.

It seems so small right this moment but I have a feeling that once baby arrives it will swallow him or her. I forget just how small newborns are.

It has been a long while since I have completed a project but maybe this winter weather will help. This pattern, found here, is a quick easy knit.
I modified it just a bit for this recipient but love, love, love the results.
It can start as a sweet little tunic dress with a cozy pair of legging or tights and hopefully morph into a sweet little sweater vest as she grows. 

It makes me yearn a little bit for a baby girl.

This lovely sweater has been shipped off to the newest member of my extended family. What does one call your cousin's baby?  I know someone out there knows the proper term.

I can post this project now that it rests in the arms of the recipients. I made one of these for my baby...two years ago!...and it has held up well

Casting Off

I got bit by the knitting bug a few months ago and have been churning out projects left and right. This is not always the case, so I'm glad to be more productive than usual. This sweater and hat combo was for a little guy born just over a week ago. The hat was supposed to be a preemie hat but it was still much too big. Of course it could have something to do with my gauge. I'm a careless knitter.  I never check my gauge. I often end up knitting and re-knitting projects for this very reason.

The color of the hat is distorted, looking more red than the grey it is. I found the hat pattern via Pinterest, it can be found here. I modified it a bit by adding the snaps to pin up the ear flaps because I knew it would be too big. The sweater is the same pattern I wrote about here.

My evenings have been busy with the knitting needles and crochet hook, trying to create baby bejos a bounty of food for his own kitchen play.
I am particularly fond of the pea pod and fringe on the carrot.

Halloween clue #3

You've seen it before, but little did I know that it would weasel it's way into the Halloween territory

Friends of our were generous enough to have a baby girl for whom I was tickled to make a girly, but not too girly, sweater for.

I love this pattern, even if I had to knit it twice. One strand of yarn wasn't enough so I pulled it all out and started over again with a double strand. Although it was time consuming it gave me the opportunity to correct a few of the mistakes that were woven into the original.
